Homework
Dear First Grade Parents,
We have had a GREAT first nine weeks of school. A reminder about first grade homework...Our main focus this year in first grade is reading/reading comprehension. Your child’s homework will be to read for 20 minutes each night. However, if you feel that your child needs more/extra practice we have included some suggestions for you to work on with your child.

Have your child…
- read and write first grade sight words…when, who, you, your, off, of, with, was, were, where, what, that, this, came, same, some, get, have, has, her, him, his, how, had, our, out, saw, went, want, them, then, those, they, as, are, all, did, has, look, like, said, she, he, we, be, me, my, why
- work on CVC (short vowel spelling patterns) Review word parts from the first nine weeks and add -ash (rash, dash, cash) -ish (fish, wish, dish) -ush (flush, rush, brush) -ack (stack, black, crack) -ick (lick, stick, brick) -eck (check, peck, deck) -ock (block, rock, clock) -uck (cluck, duck, luck) -amp (lamp, stamp, damp) -imp (primp, limp, blimp) -ump (bump, dump, clump) -ing (ring, sing, wing) -ang (rang, sang, hang) -ong (song, wrong) -ank (sank, thank) -ink (sink, think) -onk (honk) -unk (dunk, junk, stunk)
- work on words that rhyme. Call out any of the words from above and have them write a word that works the same way. Example: (ack) write back. Now write a word that rhymes with back (stack). If you can write back, write stack, write black, pack, back, crack.
- read consonant clusters and digraphs sheet. Have your child point to bl, say bl (make the sound /bl/) then say the word block…then have them say a word that begins that same way, black. cl /cl/ like cloud and clock.
- work on reading and writing numbers to 100. Call out random numbers for your child to write then have them write the number that is before and after that number. Also, use vocabulary on more and one less. Write the number that is one more than 29. Write the number that is one less than 49, etc…
- Continue to practice + (addition) flashcards to 14.
- review 2D shapes (triangle, rectangle, square, circle, trapezoid, and hexagon). Have your child draw them. Your child should also be able to describe the shape using defining attributes. Example: a rectangle is a closed shape, it has 4 straight sides, 2 sides are long and 2 sides are short, 4 vertices/angles *trapezoids have one pair of parallel sides *squares all sides are the same length
- work on 3D shapes 3D shapes defining attributes are number of faces, vertices, and edges (cone, sphere, cylinder, cube, rectangular prism)
